Applying for ETIAS: What Travellers Actually Need to Provide

What the ETIAS application asks for

ETIAS is intended as a digital travel authorisation for eligible visa-free travellers heading to Europe. During the application, travellers will be asked for personal details, passport data, current occupation and a limited set of background questions. The form may also request travel plans in Europe and, where relevant, extra details about family members linked to EU-related exemptions. If another person submits the application on your behalf, that person must provide their own details as well as explain their relationship to you.

What ETIAS does not ask for

Recent misinformation has blurred the line between an ETIAS application and later border procedures. The ETIAS form does not require health information, vaccination status or biometric data such as fingerprints.

This distinction matters: the application is an advance online process, while any checks carried out later at the border follow separate legal and operational rules.

How the application is processed and when to apply

Applications will be submitted through the official ETIAS website or app. The fee is EUR 20 unless the traveller falls under an exemption. Once submitted, the information is automatically cross-checked against European systems including SIS, VIS and EES. Most decisions are expected within minutes, but some cases may take up to 30 days, so travellers should apply well in advance of departure.
