ABTA Framed EES and ETIAS as an Early Preparation Issue for Members and Travellers

Why ABTA started communicating early

In May 2024, ABTA said EES and ETIAS were two major changes affecting some of the UK's most popular European destinations. At that point, launch dates had still not been fully confirmed, but the association argued that members needed clear information early so they could answer customer questions and prepare their businesses.

What the guidance hub was meant to do

ABTA's approach combined a member-zone information hub with a public consumer advice page. The member-facing material was described as including a Q&A built around questions already raised by travel businesses, while the public advice page was intended to give customers a reliable place to check the basics of the upcoming systems.

The broader message for the travel trade

The organisation's main point was that EES and ETIAS should not be treated as last-minute border changes. For tour operators, agents and customer-support teams, the real task was to build awareness early, explain that timelines could still move and direct travellers toward trusted guidance instead of confusion or speculation.
